More than 150 professional musicians were playing Brazilian jazz in the New York City metropolitan area at various times between 2000 and 2020. Brazilian jazz encompasses many ways of fusing jazz with Brazilian music, including bossa nova and samba-jazz, songs and instrumental music, works for small and large ensembles, and more. The musicians include men and women of different ethnic backgrounds and nationalities. Some have lived in New York since the 1960s and ’70s, others arrived in recent decades; some come and go, and some have passed away.
The website promotes the musicians and inform the public about their artistic creations and collaborations.
The website is edited by Marc Gidal, ethnomusicologist, educator, and musician, in collaboration with the musicians, and is part of his larger research project about Brazilian jazz in New York. The website is partially inspired by a similar project by ethnomusicologist Jason Stanyek to promote Brazilian musicians in New York City during the 2000s.
Stay tuned for updates.
